Kitty

One of the CIA's most flakey Cold War campaigns was Operation Acoustic Kitty. In confidential documents from the CIA's super-secret Science and Technology Directorate, it was exposed that some Cold-War-era cats were surgically altered to become advanced bugging devices. The idea was that the cats would listen in on Soviet negotiation from park benches, windowsills and garbage containers. The cat was meant to just stroll up to the sensitive conversations, entirely unnoticed. The clandestine cat's electrical internals would then capture and relay the audio to awaiting agents.

The project was begun in 1961. Former CIA officer Victor Marchetti narrates the story of the Acoustic Kitty:
"They slit the cat open, put batteries in him, and wired him up. The tail was used as an antenna. They made a monstrosity. They tested him and tested him. They found he would walk off the job when he got hungry, so they put another wire in to override that. Finally, they're ready. They took it out to a park bench and said, "Listen to those two guys. Don't listen to anything else - not the birds, no cat or dog - just those two guys!"

After several surgeries and hard training, the cyborg cat was ready for its first ground test. The CIA inserted the cat to a Soviet compound on Wisconsin Avenue in Washington, D.C., and let him out of a parked van across the street. The cat ambled into the road, and was struck by a taxi almost instantly. Five years of attempt and over $15 million in spending were resulted to roadkill in a moment. Shorty after its death a CIA operative returned to the site of accident and put the cat's remaining parts into a container to prevent the Soviets from getting their paws on the sensitive and expensive listening devices.

Operation Acoustic Kitty was completely desolated in 1967, and declared an complete failure. Perhaps due to their awkward nature, the documents describing Acoustic Kitty remain partially censored even today. But one document does congratulate the Acoustic Kitty team for their efforts:
"The work done on this problem over the years reflects great credit on the personnel who guided it, particularly (censored), whose energy and imagination could be models for scientific pioneers."

While the memo says that the use of trained cats is possible, it also says that "the environmental and security factors in using this technique in a real foreign situation force us to conclude that for our (intelligence) purposes, it would not be practical."

Big Brother 12 Episode 19

Big Brother 12 episode 19 aired August 19, and the house guests evicted someone new. The Big Brother 12 episode 19 eviction was a surprise to most of the house guests, because heading
into the night, they thought it would be either Lane or Matt going home. Those were the two nominees that HOH Brendon had put up on the block, but nobody other than Matt was aware that he was holding the Diamond Power of Veto. That power let him take himself off the block, and choose which nominee to put up in his place. During the eviction ceremony, Matt stood up to give a speech, going after Brendon, and basically saying it was a nice try at trying to evict Matt.

Matt then used the Diamond Power of Veto to take himself down, and put up Kathy as the new nominee. That meant that the houseguests now had to decide whether to vote for Kathy or Lane for eviction, and it was almost a given that they were going to vote out Kathy at this point. That is exactly what took place, and the vote was unanimous to evict Kathy as the sixth person to leave the Big Brother house. She almost seemed resigned to her fate, and maybe after 48 days in the house, she was just ready to go home. That is a long time for anyone to be away from their family, and probably made it easier that she didn’t have to stress about being on the block all week. It’s also possible that she was just in shock, and didn’t really know how to react to what had just taken place.

Good Burger

Burger Town is surprisingly the only burger joint downtown, and it promises everything from the satisfying to the extreme.

How extreme? One burger is so large it was named after the 787 jet with a half-pound patty, cheddar and bacon.

"It's a fun business," said Jeff Kim, son of owners Kuk and Soon.

With two children willing to help the family business, it's now entirely run by the Kims.

Burger Town

HOURS: 11 a.m.-8 p.m., Monday-Friday; 11 a.m.-7 p.m., Saturday; closed Sunday

ADDRESS: 601 S. 3rd St., Renton

PHONE: 425-663-9189

The greasy burger joint is much different the 120th Grocery and Deli in Bellevue, which Kuk sold about seven about years ago.

"I like American food," he explained in a thick Korean accent.

Even when he sold fresh sandwiches, he often took off to get a burger for lunch, he said.

The restaurant also offers a shorter work day, only open for lunch and early dinners, Jeff said.

The Newcastle couple picked Renton, because Boeing promises a stable local economy and there was a prime spot along South Third Street, downtown's busiest street, Kuk said.

However, the building remodel was wrought with complications, taking the restaurant nine months to open.

Black-and-red furniture fills the informal storefront, a soda machine dominates the front counter with its row of yellow mustard bottles.

The red baskets lined with checkered paper do more for atmosphere than the room itself, which is sparsely decorated with undersized pictures.

The menu is filled with typical gourmet burger fair, including the California burger ($5.49) with avocado and bacon, a customer favorite.

"The price is really good for what you're getting," Jeff said.

The hamburger is never frozen, but the shoestring fries are. They're cooked to tasty crispness ($1.69-$2.29).

Most things are charbroiled, including a large menu of wraps ($5.99 each).

Like all good burger joints, it has milkshakes made with real ice cream ($3.49).

So far business has been good, especially for lunch.

"The customers like our food," Kuk said. "If this is successful, I'll try to open another."

After selling the Bellevue Deli, Kuk worked as an elder at

Philippi Presbyterian Church in Shoreline, he said.

Soon is a wellness center nurse who often works with large corporations, she said, adding it was odd telling her boss she was quitting to work flipping burgers.

Jeff, 29, flew home from Korea, where he's taught English for the past year, to help his parents open the business.

He plans to return to Korea to continue developing curriculum, he said. "Come, try our burgers."

Outside Lands

The third edition of the Outside Lands Music Festival in San Francisco is almost here. It will take place on August 14th and 15th at the spectacular Golden Gate Park.

Aside from its natural beauty, the park contributes an incredible element which helps the audience enjoy the music like no other of this nature: the vegetation acts like a natural insulation, preventing the music coming from one stage from mixing with the other.

Last year, Outside Lands provide five stages, one of which was run with solar energy.

For the 2010 edition, the list of artists is led by American rock bands The Strokes  (August 14th) and Kings of Leon (August 15th) Also Sunday, Colombian band Aterciopelados will perform. They play an original mix of rock en español with Latinamerican tones ‘a must see and listen’.

“I love San Francisco, it’s a place that I really enjoy every time we perform there,” said Natham Followill, the drummer for Kings of Leon during a telephone press conference. ‘I think we¹re going to have a very good time at the festival.’

This popular alternative rock band, originally from Nashville, Tennessee, is made up of three brothers and a cousin. It was formed in 1999.

For Natham, coming to Outside Lands (OSL) as the main band is an honor. But he also regrets that the tours and performances keep him from spending more time with his family.

“What allowed us to become one of the most popular bands? The intense work, the dedication,” the drummer assures. “Since we are family members, this also may help because we have a solidarity and a competitiveness amongst ourselves.”

In reference to the songs they’re preparing for OSL, Natham commented that lots of times this type of festival allows them to better understand the connection between certain songs and the public.

“Besides, one has a responsibility in front of the audience.”

For this reason, the members of Kings of Leon talk over every aspect of their performances, Natham explains. “We want the public to have a good time, but we also want to have a good time at each performance.”

The musician also commented that he’s been warned that music festivals in the country are facing difficulties.

“It could be due to the economy, lots of young people who want to go have to travel, have expenses, so then they have to decide if they’re going to spend the money on a festival.”

But, he highlighted the importance of these events.

“Besides the music, you meet people.”

The coming together of so many people is an important part of massive events of this nature.

But only at OSL can good food and fine wine also be enjoyed.

“The first year of the festival (2008) we prepared sandwiches and we took advantage of seeing the best bands for free,” said chef Scott Youkilis from Maverick Restaurant in San Francisco. Then, in a more serious tone he added, “Our sandwiches are really good, a bit spicy and they go well together with the music!”

Finally, Youkilis recommended the wines produced by Sutton Cellars.

“They are also currently producing an excellent vermouth that we serve in our restaurant.”

Sutton Cellars is one of the wineries in the area that participates in OSL in the tent dedicated to wines called “Wine Lands.”

The telephone press conference ended with the participation of Eugene Hutz from the band Gogol Bordello from New York dedicated to gypsy-style music.

The group, which also was formed in 1999, has put on shows around the world and enjoys great popularity among supporters of this type of music genre.

According to Hutz, the presentation of Gogol Bordello amongst so many rock bands will add a special spice to Outside Lands. No one doubts it.

Billy Budd

MUSIC fans can catch performances from the critically acclaimed Glyndebourne Festival Opera – without leaving Wales.

Aberystwyth Arts Centre will be screening a number of productions from the Sussex event, including a live performance of The Rake’s Progress.

Other operas to be screened include Billy Budd by Benjamin Britten and Hansel and Gretel by Engelbert Humperdinck.

“One of the most dangerous temptations for an institution like Glyndebourne is to become hidebound – to do what you’ve always done, or what you feel is expected of you,” said David Pickard, general director of Glyndebourne.

“So when we plan each Glyndebourne season, we aim to balance the expected with the unexpected.”

Glyndebourne has become synonymous with The Rake’s Progress thanks to John Cox’s 1975 production.

With Cox and David Hockney returning to recreate their acclaimed production, it will be conducted for the first time by Glyndebourne’s current music director, Vladimir Jurowski.

Michael Grandage, artistic director of London’s Donmar Warehouse, made his long-awaited operatic debut directing Benjamin Britten's Billy Budd at Glyndebourne this summer, to widespread critical acclaim.

Sir Mark Elder conducted this opera for the first time, marking his 100th operatic production in his musical career. With its familiar fairytale story, feel-good ending and magical mix of simple folk tunes and rich Wagnerian textures, Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel has long cast its musical spell over both adults and children alike.

This witty production sees the broom-maker’s two outcast children lose their way in the enchanted forest before finding themselves in every hungry child's dream.

A spokesman for Aberystwyth Arts Centre said: “We’re really excited to host screenings of top quality opera from Glyndebourne, globally recognised as one of the great opera houses.”

The screenings take place at Aberystwyth Arts Centre on August 21, 24 and 26, starting at 6.30pm. Tickets are on sale at the box office on 01970 623232

Justin Bieber Takes Estrogen Pills:

Justin Bieber Takes Estrogen Pills: Justin Bieber is the biggest 16 year old flirt this side of the Atlantic  as he proved on ‘Chelsea Lately’ the other night. Justin Bieber spent his time on the talk show flirting with Chelsea Handler, and planning their first date in his brand new Range Rover. Yes, 16 year old got a Range Rover for his birthday from mentor and manager Usher.
Chelsea Handler asked Justin Bieber if he was dating a Kardashian sister and Justin told her, “Well, Kim Kardashian tweeted: “I think Justin Bieber should date my sister”.
“But I think I should date her” says Justin Bieber as the crowd laughed and hollered. Chelsea Handler then asked him how he was handling all his success and he said: “I feel like I am just having a blast…I have the best fans in the world…this is all a blessing”.
Chelsea Lately then tells him that one day he is going to be Justin Timberlake and he will have to follow up with all the flirting then. Good for Chelsea because some young women are going to fall for his lines “hook, line and sinker” and Justin Bieber may have a ‘Joe Jonas/Taylor Swift’ type breakup on his hands.
Justin Bieber was also on Los Angeles last week. He went to watch ‘Captain EO’ with more than 500 fans at Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif., on Friday, March 26, 2010. Contest winners from all over the country joined Ryan Seacrest and Justin Bieber for a private event at Disneyland to celebrate the release of Bieber;s latest CD ‘My World 2.0?.

Kyan Douglas

There's a new man in Lance Bass's life.
The former 'N Sync singer has been happily dating Lorenzo Martone – designer Marc Jacobs's former fiancĂ© – for two months, a source close to the pair tells PEOPLE.

"They're dating each other regularly, really like each other and enjoy each other's company," the friend tells PEOPLE. "They're going to take it one day at a time and see how it goes."

 Lance Bass Blasts Homophobia :

Although the pair met briefly a few years ago, they reconnected at an amfAR event in early June, following Martone's split from Jacobs.

"Lance wasn't interested in dating right away because he was getting over his own breakup with [Queer Eye for the Straight Guy's] Kyan Douglas," says the friend. "But Lorenzo was persistent, so they started talking and slowly spending more time together and really hit it off."

Since then, Bass, 31, and the Brazil-born Martone, who runs a New York public relations agency he also founded, have been spotted out together in Manhattan and Miami.

So what makes it work? "Lorenzo always thought Lance was really attractive, and Lorenzo is gorgeous, totally Lance's type – tall, dark and handsome," says the source. "They like the same things – movies, dinner with friends. They're very low-key. And it's nice that everyone in their social circles get along."

"When they both found themselves single at the same time, and Lorenzo found out Lance was now living in New York, he jumped at the opportunity to get to know him better."

There was an awful lot of hype leading up to Sunday night’s UFC on Versus 2: Jones Vs Matyushenko event, with many MMA fans putting Matyushenko down as the underdog and Jon Jones as UFC’s top prospect.

Clearly, the UFC is showcasing Jon Jones as this is his second time headlining on Versus. And it’s not a bad guy to showcase. I think everyone who enjoys this sport loves to watch this guy fight.

U.S. Admits Existence of Iran Attack Plan

WASHINGTON — Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mike Mullen said Sunday the United States has a plan in place to attack Iran, if it is necessary.

“Military actions have been on the table and remain on the table” for curbing Iran’s nuclear ambition,” Mullen, the highest-ranking U.S. military officer, told NBC’s “Meet the Press”. When asked if the military has a plan in place to attack Iran if it is needed, he replied: “we do.”

“I hope we don’t get to that, but it’s an important option, and it’s one that’s well understood,” he said.

But Mullen said attacking Iran would not be the best option Washington seeks “not just for the consequences of the action itself, but the things that could result after the fact.”

According to him, the so-called “dual-track” strategy, or the combination of multilateral diplomacy and international sanctions, remains the preferred option to suspend Tehran’s nuclear program.
