2010 Emmy Winners

The Emmy Awards aired last night, and I must admit there were very few surprises.  George Clooney was charming, Jane Lynch won best supporting actress, Mad Men is the Best Drama and Betty White snagged a trophy for her guest appearance on Saturday Night Live.

However, HBO’s Temple Grandin – which dominated the long-form field with 5 wins Sunday night – had me up off the couch and at my computer.  (Thank you, Google.)

The biopic chronicles the life of Temple Grandin, who, according to Wikipedia, is an internationally recognized cattle handling expert, author and professor – she was also diagnosed with autism at age 4, at a time when most professionals and parents thought that an autism diagnosis was essentially a death sentence to any sort of achievement or productivity in life.

Based on her own experience, Temple advocates early intervention to address autism, as well as supportive teachers and mentors who can direct the child’s fixations in fruitful directions.  She is considered the philosophical leader of both the autism advocacy and animal welfare movements, famously getting down on her hands and knees to visualize the way animals perceive the world in order to design more humane ways to handle livestock.

In addition to her biopic’s Emmy wins, Temple was also recently named a hero on Time Magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people in the world.
