Parent Connect

It’s almost time for back to school.

Thousands of families are expected at the Austin Convention Center Saturday for Austin Independent School District’s Back-to-School Bash and Safety Fair.

One of the sponsors of the bash is News 8's parent company Time Warner Cable. Through the Connect a Million Minds initiative, they hope to inspire students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math.

The event will cover a variety of topics and offer free back to school gear.

“It’s really important so we get everyone in one place. So that parents and children can come and find out exactly what’s available at AISD,” AISD Ombudsman Beverly Reeves said.

One of the main concerns being covered at the convention center is safety.

“We actually have a safe walk to school presentation, where we lay out a road and we actually teach the kids how to observe warning signs, to walk with a buddy, to walk with their parents, cross looking left-right-left,” Reeves said.

If you're gearing up for back to school, check out the School Resources section of our website. You'll find information about immunizations, school districts, bus routes, school supply lists and more.

Seton hospital will also be on hand at the event offering free immunizations. Officials with AISD said these vaccines are required by law, and without them, your child will be sent home.

“Each year Seton hospital provides us free immunizations,” Reeves said. “We provide this service to our families so they can come here, get information and get immunizations so they’ll be ready.”

The Back-to-School Bash and Safety Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 2p.m. Saturday.

AISD students begin school August 23.
