Fargo Marathon

n the span of six years, the Fargo Marathon has grown tenfold.

Fargo Marathon director Mark Knutson said more than 20,000 runners had registered for the event – when you take into account all the races – prior to Friday’s 5-kilometer run, which had around 6,500 competitors. The inaugural Fargo Marathon in 2005 had 2,271 participants.

“I’m pretty confident that we’re over the 20 (thousand) mark,” Knutson said. “Our guess is that we’ve exceeded the 20,000 we were hoping to get this year, in terms of registration. With any racing, you have a no-show factor.”

The full marathon, half marathon, 10K and team relays are set for today.

Knutson said Friday that 2,200 runners had signed up for the full marathon, 6,500 had signed up for the half marathon, 1,600 had signed up for the team relays, 2,800 had signed up for the 10K and 2,400 runners took part in Thursday’s youth run.

Due to that no-show factor, Knutson said the event may fall short of 20,000 total participants, but he is pleased that, on paper, the event has eclipsed the 20,000 mark.

“I think that 20,000 is really a testament to the community and the local and regional runners,” Knutson said.

Knutson said about 650 signed up for the adult races Thursday night and an additional 300 kids. By midday Friday, Knutson said another 200 adults had signed up for races.

Last year, the Fargo Marathon drew about 14,000 competitors and that was the previous high for participants.
