Duncan Keith

Trailing 2-0 in the second period and down Duncan Keith and Andrew Ladd, the Chicago Blackhawks scored the next four goals, eliminating the San Jose Sharks with a 4-2 win to earn their first trip to the Stanley Cup finals since 1992.

Who else but Dustin Byfuglien would score the winning goal? It came on the third power play of the third period as Byfuglien tallied his third game-winning goal of the series.

The Hawks dominated the third period just as San Jose had done in Game 3. The home team outshot the Sharks 9-3 in that period, and 27-18 for the game.

For a lot of this contest it looked like San Jose had control. Midway through the second period they scored a shorthanded goal to go up 2-0. On that play, the Blackhawks briefly lost Keith when he got hit in the face by a clearing attempt and reportedly lost several teeth.

Keith went to the bench and the Hawks were forced to cover for him with a forward. Patrick Marleau took advantage, scoring his fifth goal of the series.

But the Hawks responded with two goals in the final seven minutes of the second period to tie the game. A key moment came when Brent Seabrook’s tally close to the net was, at first, called a no-goal. Upon further review the puck clearly crossed the goal line for a split second before coming back out. The referees changed the call and the Blackhawks were back in it.

San Jose opened the game with a surge that had the Hawks on their heels. The home team managed only one shot in the first 14 minutes of the game but they responded with a push of their own, finishing with six shots in the final six minutes of the opening period.

The Sharks never regained that early form. After getting seven shots in the first period, San Jose managed only 11 the rest of the way.

The Hawks lost one of their unsung checking line heroes when Ladd went down with an apparent arm injury in the first period after playing just 2:14. Ladd did not return and there was no official announcement on his status.
